No. There are a number of free anti-virus and malware options available, including AVG, Avast!, Avira-Anti-Vir, and Comodo Anti-Virus for anti-virus products.

For malware checking the old standbys of Ad-Aware and Spybot are still great choices. Comodo also has some free anti-malware tools.

Generally I don't like the big fat suites that promise everything. Go with best-in-breed and what works best for you in combination.

In terms of firewalls, you have choices including the built-in Windows firewall (free, easy, not that great), Comodo (a good choice), and Zone Alarm (free) which is OK, or Zone Alarm Pro (paid) which is the most highly rated personal firewall.

Take a look at the Microsoft Security Site for some other useful information: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/default.mspx

For some other possibly useful references visit my personal "tools" page at http://home.comcast.net/~kmckenzie99/tools/.

For a list of excellent and mostly free tools of all kinds visit http://www.filehippo.com.

For my blog site with various random info visit http://360.yahoo.com/mckenzie_keith and review my blog entries. You might find some useful information there.

The short answer is NO! McAfee is imo is proof that marketing works. Along with norton they are the leading brands of system protection because they have nice packaging and they have lots of deals with stores and marketing agencys. Dont get me wrong computer security is important, however, ironically i think such protection is only really usefull for a competent user, how is a novice suppost to decide what programs to allow through the firewall. Aswell as the fact that the only viruses you need to worry about will be on your system ruining your computer before you or your antivirus can do anything about it, and they will never aid in cleaning a decent virus (a firewall however will, but only when used to an advanced degree). So the soloution? Go free, find the best rated free antivirus program, and a free firewall. To name a few tools i have tried and trusted (however all antivirus software i have ever used has let me down at some point apart from f-secure) AVG, Comodo, Avast, Prevx (sort of), Spybot S&D and Adaware. But at the end of the day a truely decent virus will get you whatever you do, and the simplist cure is a system wipe, backup your data and update poor flawed windows everyday! Hope it helps you decide.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

You need it or one of it's free alternatives such as Zone Alarm. Without it hackers have better access to your computer than you do.
