We are renovating a old bathroom that has a nasty silver razor outlet that I want to get rid of. I want it covered safely so I need to know if I to shut off power to the wires or just cap them.
Thanks

I am not an electrician; and I do not play one on Yahoo Answers. But my father was, and he taught me enough to get by.

If you are going to kill the line entirely, trace it to the breaker and eliminate it at the source.

You're talking old here, so it's probably not GFCI protected---a bad situation in a bathroom, even if it's covered up. If it's cloth insulation, you don't even want it in the wall. Anywhere.

If you cap it off, it's still a junction box and will look unsightly. If you kill at the source, you can drywall or plaster over it, and sleep knowing that your family will not die in an electrical fire.

Safety first. Consult an qualified electrician if you don't have full confidence. That's what electricians are for.

I rented an old house, once, and it had four electrical systems for every two decades of it's existence, and the bathroom scared me the most. It was a fire trap, and I did not sleep well.

Let caution rule so that you don't loose the investment you've put into the renovation. Do it or get it done right. Good luck with the house project.

Best to shut off power to them, and try to unhook them at box so you don't have live wires in your wall. If not an option cap them off and tape the caps on the put them inside wall and cover
