yes you can change the power supply to it,we have done this a lot,get the wire that goes to the center of the lighter which will be the hot wire, and run it over to the fuse panel, find one that's not hot when the key is off,it should still be fused ,we have did some like this ,for e-workers,and its not hard to do,good luck with it.

Sure it is. You could just move the wire to a switched feed. The problem is that the fuse may not handle the extra current from the lighter and the other circuit that it was designed for.
A properly rated switch would work, but then you have to manually turn it on and off.
The best way to do it, is to purchase a relay with the rated contacts and cut the lighter feed wire and run it to a normally open set of contacts. Then take the relays coil wire and run it to a switched feed from the fuse panel and ground the other side of the coil. The relay will draw a lot less current than a lighter. Then when you turn the ignition switch off, the power will be cut to the lighter also.
good luck.

I promise this is not as hard as it looks, get a pen and paper.. You will need to buy a 12 volt relay and 4 female spade connectors that will fit onto the relay terminals. Here is how you will wire it up: First, leaving enough room to work with, cut the power wire going to the cigarette lighter. The wire going to the cigarette lighter should connect to terminal 30 on the relay. The wire that is hot that feeds the cigarette lighter should connect to terminal 87 on the relay. Terminal 85 should go to ground (you can tap into the cigarette lighter ground) And Terminal 86 will be connected to a wire that comes on with the switch. Since you are using a relay, the current draw will only be 250milliamps. You can use the radio switch wire. Terminal 87A will remain empty. What you are doing by using the relay is connecting the origional power wire to the cigarette lighter by a low current switch (the relay) without drawing any power from any other source. This is the proper and safe way to do this.

Sure, I would actually Install a automobile rated switch (buy at napa or other car center) rated for auto use. Wire it into vehicle, located in some convenient spot, so that it serves as a disconnect. That way you could turn on only when needed.
or You could wire it to the vehicle ignition accessory wire. This wire becomes hot (in most vehicle) when you have finished starting the car.
