The way I see it is..the Constitution, written by our forefathers, gave the Congress the right to tax and spend. We, the people, elect our Congressmen and women and they in turn should tax and spend based on the wants, needs, and beliefs of the population they represent. This would be a democratic way for the "people" to have a say in spending and taxing. There is no logical way for each individual to choose how they want the tax money spent and how much to spend. Also, supposedly Congress would have the resources and information and budget concerns for taxes and spending to meet the needs of the population that ordinary citizens would not possess.
Also, if memory serves me right (and it may not) the problem during the American revolution was "taxation without representation." However, it is not completely solved today. I believe the residents of Washington, D.C. are taxed like every other state and yet have no representation in Congress.
Hope this helps. I could be way off. It has been a long time since I studied American history.

One of the main reasons for taxes is for the Fiscal System, which simply means that the Government can control the economy by simply adjusting tax rates. If they want more people buying certain things, tax goes down on those things, if they want less buying, more taxing is given. Its a simple form of control that the Government uses to monitor the Economy. If taxes didn't exist then we would have a much less stable economy, its unfortunate, and fortunate at the same time...and we do vote about taxes, in a sort of...distant way...by voting for a President, you are voting for their tax policies. Furthermore, if you join a political party, you can vote for those tax policies, among other issues.

1) It was taxation without representation they were upset about, not the taxes themselves. It's necessary for a government to tax, but they were upset because they had no say in their government and were still paying it.
2) But that's not to say a lot of taxes aren't total frauds. The income tax is illegal, other taxes are unfair in idea and principle, and the government is constantly just trying to get money from us, not help us. There are problems, you just have to find the right ones.

Its hard to imagine our country was only founded because some Boston smugglers didn't want to pay taxes.
Taxes pay for schools, roads, bridges, the military, most scientific research, help fund student loans, help fund home mortgages, help business start ups, help the poor and middle class with food and medicine, help fund certain hospitals, pay for our government.

The main reason was NOT taxes per se, the issue was taxation without representation. England charged and collected taxes on the colonies, however, they did not allow us to have representation in Parliment.
