It emails everyone in your address book and then gets in their email address books and emails everyone again and so on and so forth.

Before you know it people are asking why you keep emailing them?

A computer WORM is a self-contained program (or set of programs), that is able to spread working copies of itself to other computers. Worms do not need to attach themselves to a host program. There are two types of worms--host computer worms and network worms.

- Host Worm
Host computer worms use network connections to copy themselves to other computers.

- Network Worm
Network worms are made up of different parts called "segments". These segments can run on different computers using a network for communication purposes. Segments can replicate from one computer to another. Network worms that have one main segment that controls the work of the other segments are sometimes called "octopuses."

Well a worm is just a type of malicious program that spread quickly, dont get caught up on the worm bit. The malicious program however? Easy for experienced users, hard for noobs. As others have said decresed or abnormal system performance is the only obvious sign you'll see without looking, so if that is the case, or just have a hunch... basically the key is to find programs or services running that you don't know the purpose of, and google them. To see what you have running use either the windows task manager, or trent micros hijackthis (its a life saver it really is). Go down the lists and google every program and service and boot command you dont recognise. This will be a great learning tool as you will learn about what processes are normal and will help detection in the future. You must note that several viruses use innocent names or ones that are in theory easy to confuse for ligitmate ones so be agressive in deciding what to check up on.

You will notice strange behavior such as:
Slow startup, some files are deleted. Pop ups, your OS crashes a lot, internet favorites you didn't add.
Folders you didn't create. Desktop shortcuts you didn't create.
Some programs won't run properly.
