How do the US compare to Western Europe as far as the quality of living is concerned?

In a nutshell, American life seems centered around shopping, what you have. European life seems centered around enjoying your friends and loved ones. Due to basic welfare supports, like medical care, Europeans don't have as much stress to make a living as in USA. USA has more of a have/have not population. More desperate people in USA, turning to crime or drugs or living on the edge.
