What other steps are required to accomplish this. Do I turn off the built-in wifi, or what. I have a D-link MIMO USB wireless adaptor.

i agree, the usb adapters are not good normally for reception, i would get a pc card type wifi adapter that plugs into the pcmcia (pc card) slot, these are much better, just turn off the built in wifi and install the software that comes with the adapter and all should be well, remember to install the software before plugging in the adapter

The USB adaptors I've tried don't have very good reception. Your best bet is to get a better antenna or setup an access point closer to where your laptop is.

those are acutally weaker
get a card with an antena or any normal one should work
but its pretty much worthless since you have it built in.
it might conflict so stick to the one you have, n get your own wireless signal
