Tradition has definetely much to do with it, lets remember tennis is a sport for "gentlemen" and "ladies" and in the past only rich and educated people played it, now it is different and has become more popular, but some traditions remain (like in golf). But silence is kept NOT ONLY AT SERVICE, it is kept during the whole point and only when the point has finished people applaud and cheer.

I think it is more of a traditional things, because in baseball, football, basketball, soccer, or other sport people always remain quiet during most exciting point. it is about the reaction of the crow goes for the serve or score a touchdown. After the ball are being serve, people are more likely to give the person the best support from them. it is more saying " woow" look at that, because if you are good at your sport, it doesn't matter if the crow boo, or silence, or cheer.

Because otherwise they will distract the the player.Players need a lot of concentration to toss the ball right, perform the motion and make a 170km/h serve. That's why many players peerform some rituals before serving(Rafa- pulling his socks,Sharapova -making her hair,Roddick pulling his cap down,...many bounce the ball a few times before serving).Serve is the only strike ,in which you toss the ball yourself,so it's very important to do everything the right way and stay as concentrated as possible.

This gives the server some guiet time so he/she can make a good serve. In tennis, the serve is one of the most important plays. Once the serve has been complete the fans can cheer, applause, whatever. Hope this answers your question.

to let the players concentrate to their maximum. it would be annoying if you couln't hear yourself think and how to play the next point with an audience going crazy. It can distract some players so i guess it's some kind of tradition but more respect to the players.

The AUDIENCE was penalized by having to stay after the debate for 20 minutes

no.. it is just about respecting the player.. because once I saw on TV. Henin was serving.. then when she tossed the ball, this guy made a loud shout.. then she, caught the ball instead of serving it. because it is just so rude, to disturb a player. so, the person that shouted got humiliated. it's like you want to stranggle that person.
