The first portions were erected in 1961, and much of it was torn down after the mass protests of 1989 when crowds began tearing it apart themselves.
There are still a few small sections left in Berlin, so you could say it's not completely gone, but as a political barrier, it ended in 1989.

The thing that I remember most were the shooting of people who tried to escape across it. It seemed so wonderful when just one of them would make it across.
