someone in the family's personality or hobby? I love to pick up unique ones. My sister's husband is always fixing things, and I saw a neat ornament that said Mr. Fixit with minature tools on it. Last year I gave him a barbecue pit with miniture utensils. It was so cute.

I have a whole collection of soft and fuzzy Mr and Mrs Clauses that I picked up at the dollar store. Also some cute snowmen and women. I like them because they are cute and unusual and the contrast they make to my old fancy glass ball ornaments is pleasing to me.

And I do feel strongly that our Christmas trees should be special to us. It gives us more pleasure to look at them when they have ornaments on them that are connected to us in strong ways.

Sounds like a great ornament! I've always bought my children an ornament every year of their lives and now my grandchildren too. They all have wonderful family trees, no themed things....and they all seem to know each others ornaments as well. Each has been hand chosen by me! ( 2 of my children buy me an ornament every year as well...they're just beautiful!)

Yes, someone I know loves cars and trucks so each year I see what new automobile Hallmark has out and will buy it for him. One year I found an old red Chevy truck with a Christmas tree in the back. He really liked it.
That same year he surprised me with an Allen Jackson ornament that played "All I want is you for Christmas".

I like to collect the old glass ones . The glass is paper thin.

I do so for other people, not so much for myself. For years I had keepsake ornaments from my parents and grandparents, but alas lost them in a storage snafu.

My eldest daughter takes her sons each year to purchase a new ornament for that year that marks some special interest, travel destination or memory. Neat!

Do it every year for each of the grandkids. They're building up quite the collections now, and they love having their very own ornaments to hang on the tree each year. Their special interests change as they grow, so it's easy to always find something different and fun.

It take me forever, to get the right present for the right person. Something they can enjoy and keep and that suits their personality and likes. Things that they can really enjoy. I start in October now, because that gives me time to look carefully and pick things that mean something to the person. I loathe giving money. Or I will knit a scarf if someone needs one for cold wintry days. Bottle of good wine, if affordable are nice for people with wine collections. Senior pensions, make that a bit hard.

While that is a great Idea, I happen to own a dog that would have a field day trying to break, chew, or hide any & all breakable ornaments.
I put up a very small table tree with dog treats on it instead.

Me too...I choose ornaments that have sentimental value every year...when the tree is decorated, it brings back many great memories. This year will be bitter sweet, for my mom's ornaments are now mine and I remember every Christmas as a kid decorating the tree with them...and my dead business partner was a Star Trek nut, we have many Star Trek pieces that will go on the tree in honor of his love of Christmas...And yes, it will be lovely to remember so many wonderful times. ... tears perhaps, but love and joy too. Peace and love, Phil
