It's because they find it amusing to watch individuals do the pee-pee dance from the car up to the counter to request the key.

Right the locked Bath Rooms at Gas stations are the most dirty. Seems now when you can go into the rest rooms at the bigger Super Gas stations they are better maintained. Good question too.

They keep them locked due to vandalism, or a chance of vandalism. Which makes complete sense, due to the fact that when people stop at the gas station to use the restrooms, they really need to use them.
Take care.

They are just protecting themselves from the damage done by vandals. Can be very costly when it involves plumbing. We have damage done several times a month to our bathroom at work and cannot lock the door. Broken toilets. paper towel dispenser yanked off the wall. soap squirted all over. clogging and then flushing.thank god there is a drain in the floor.

Or people might come in and graffiti them. Or completely trash them; pull out all the paper, make them into wads and throw them on the ceiling. Stuff like that.

When you have to ask for the key they can then get your license plate number and then that way they'll know who did all the damage inside and can report it after you leave.
