It depends upon the country you are in,

Left-wing are the radical or partial radical parties that believe in Social Justice, Social Welfare, better health-care and education for ordinary people
Right-wing are the parties that believe in Conservative ideals. They are usually big-business orientated, believe in little or no government involvement in health-care, education and social welfare. They are usually more pro-military, spending large amounts on the Military to the detriment of other national needs.

In the US it would be the American Communist Party who are left wing. The Democrats, in America, are considered left, but is in fact are more than slightly right of centre. The Democrats have slightly better policies on Social Welfare, education, health etc. The Republican Party are extreme Right, as they are ultra conservative, pro-military and pro-business. There are other minor parties in the US, usually right-of-centre in political philosophies. Some are even more right-wing than the Republicans, like the American Nazi Party.

In Britain the progression from left to right in politics would be:
The extreme left would be the British Communist Party, then the Socialist Party, the British Labour Party (which is considered a Centre-left party), then the Tories etc and then the racist parties like the British Nazi Party and the British First Party.

In Australia, again from left to right.
The Communist Party of Australia, the Socialist Party of Australia, the GREENS, the Australian Labour Party (which has moved from a Centre-left position to a centre-right position in policies), Democrats (a break-away party from the Liberals), The Democratic Labour Party (a Catholic orientated break-away party, in 1955, from the ALP), Family First Party, National Party (a country-orientated conservative party) then the Liberal Party (a city-centric big-business orientated party). Then you have have of the extreme Right-wing racist parties like the Nazi Party.
There are a few other minor parties of various orientation.

Left stands for progress and represents all people. Right stands for repression and represents aristocrats. Right-wingers are always flapping their gums about law'n'order, but if it's unregulated corporations ripping off the peons in the middle class, they couldn't give two shinolas.
