i just bought a new standard car and at first four clicks with the hand break was good enough to keep it from rolling, because unfortanenatly for me my drive way is so steep. so i notice it was getting less tight when i pulled the hand brake up. today i got in my car and it started rolling so yea i was pretty lucky it happened then. now i have to make it much tighter to keep it from rolling. What is causing this, is it normal, and is it bad?

If the car is new as you stated, I would take it back as it would be under warranty. As one person stated, the rear brakes need to be adjusted, that's what adjusts the parking brake. There is also a seperate adjustment for the parking brake handle itself but on a new car that would be stupid to adjust that as there is no way it could be stretched on an 07 or 08 vehicle. I seriously doubt its worn down shoes/pads or anything being that the car is new.

Hand Brake Loose

Hand brakes are often cable operated and the cable stretches over time, and the brake pads or shoes wear thinner, so slack develops in the cable, so it has to be adjusted, just like the brake cables on your bike. Eventually the cable will stretch to the point where the hand brake will not work. Any reputable brake shop can do it. It's kind of tricky to do yourself, but it can be done if you can get under the car. There is a specific measurement for every car that the brake handle should move.

This is somewhat normal for a new car. The cable that connects to the brakes will stretch and needs to be readjusted. Once adjusted, the stretching should be minimal after that.

what car model? check the manufacturers web site as some cars have been having handbreak faults (sorry cant remember the make, think volvo or VW) and the car just rolls away, there having a recall.

you should get it checked out, as you could leave it parked, and then you dont even know when it might happen, and it just rolls off and hits/kills someone.

try to park it and then put it in gear. especially because you stop on a steep slope.

I don't know the age of your car, but is possible that the cable/s are frayed and or broken. In which case some time soon the brake will just pull all the way back and not apply.
If it is brand new, get the dealer to check it now.

Your hand brake is fine. The problem is you. For some unknown reason you are getting stronger by the day. If this keeps going you will be the strongest man on earth by friday.

What kind of car?

It could be a number of things:
Worn out back brakes?
Out of adjustment ?
Stretched brake cable?
Fluid on the brake shoes?
Rear wheel seal blown?
Weak right arm?

rear brakes aren't adjusted when reversing or you use it to execute drifting corners and the cables have stretched.
