It is not necessary to capitalize "white" or "white people", but if talking about other racial/ethnic groups and capitalize those you should then capitalize "whites". Just keep it consistent. However, you do have to capitalize in White Americans.

If you're not going to capitalize the "i" in your question, and you're going to use "was" instead of "were", I'd not lose any sleep over it.
