I would choose to hit a baseball 500 feet because if you throw 100 MPH, you aren't guaranteed success. If you have bad control or have a tendency to throwright down the middle, you won't have success even with a 100 MPH fastball.

Now, if you asked whether I would rather be able to throw a 100 MPH fastball with control as apposed to hitting a baseball 500 feet, I would pick the former any day, but.......

Also, being able to hit a baseball 500 doesn't guarantee major success. Sure, it means you are very strong and have the ability to hit a baseball extremely far, but I would want to be able to hit that far or at least close to that far consistently, not just once.

Good question!
=)

Throw the baseball 100 MPH.

A complete no brainer.
I was a pitcher and you can pitch at that speed every time, or mix it up with a curve, slider, change up or whatever.
You are in control.
But a hitter can't hit a ball 500 feet every time.
He is not in control of that battle. And secondly, every park has different dimensions, which means that when he does connect and hits it 500 feet, it is just a longer HR, but it is worth no more in run total.

A 100 MPH, elite pitcher will be paid at a higher rate than a hitter and with more prestige.
A good comparison is... a pitcher is like a quarterback in football and a hitter is like a running back.

wow, great question!
if i had good control when throwing 100 MPH, i'd choose to be a great pitcher
i think i'd pick the ability to hit a baseball 500 feet because hitting home runs is considered one of the greatest accomplishments in baseball.
ie, Babe Ruth was an amazing pitcher but the Yankees organization chose to make him an outfielder so that he'd be able to hit because home run kings are a lot more famous than great pitchers

You know, Estaban Yan could throw 100 mph. There's a reason his career never really took off. However, players who can mash a ball 500 feet will always be looked at as "having potential" as long as they bat above the Mendoza line. Plus, throwing a ball consistently at over 100 mph kills your arm. Joel Zumaya may have a rubber arm now, but I'd like to meet him 20 years down the road. Give me the 500 feet mash any day!
