There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG the best of all the free anti-virus programs.
If you are not willing to spend money it is good to have some kind of anti-virus software

For a Cost
This is my recommendation for anti-virus. Free are good, but they are not as accurate as the top paid anti-virus software

Top-Tier
Kaspersky

Nod32

Protect yourself from Web nasties with this free utility.

ZoneAlarm lets you block uninitiated and unwanted traffic, even while your PC is unattended or while you're not using your connection. To further limit your exposure to attack, specify which applications can access the Internet. The program lets you stop e-mail-borne Visual Basic Script worms, too. "

I have used for ten plus years what the Government of China uses. This antivirus is a one time fee of $29.99 and you get automatic updates, all new versions free for life. Plus the software is state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any other antivirus program out in the market today.

Kills, in real time, any webpage that you may vist and there is an embedded trojan or spyware. Uploads any program for real time scanning that does not have a valid ID, or name of person who wrote the program. And scans, for trojans and will advise you if you want to allow or kill the program.

There are just to many features in this antivirus to mention.

Can tell you that I have never had one virus in over ten years with, Twister Trojan Antivirus, Beijing, China. http://www.filseclab.com

Read the webpage and if you like it I assure you that the software is worth it weight in gold.

Try using free AVG. Get it from www.download.com . Key in 'avg' in Download.com search box and download free AVG from results page.

Once installed, update it as often as you like daily.

I like Avast or Kaspersky or Nod32 because they don't slow your system down.
If you prefer free antivirus, use AVGFree
