The correct term is the French term mise en abyme, or a frame story or narative or a metatext. Poe used two of them in The Fall of the House of Usher - The Mad Trist of Sir Launcelot Canning and the poem The Haunted Palace. They are often used as ways to advance the plot or to add foreshadowing or symbolism. The term means actually "setting or placing in an abyss".

Yowee what a touching story, thank you for sharing this. When I adpoted my Wolf he was a pup, and I had to go away a week and asked a friend in a neighboring town to watch him. I was living in WA state with my mom and Kels at the time, and though the friend was only about 12 miles away, on another Island, she alerted me one day, that Wolf had chewed through the rope he was tied to, and was missing. I was in a panic, he was only with me maybe 3 months, and just before we flew home, the friend alerted me again. "I found your Pup laying on the front lawn of your house." He still had some of the chewed rope on him, but had to go through forests, and cross a tributary of Puget sound, plus cross highways, but when I got home, my friend was there, as was Wolf. He's never run away again.
