If evolution is true, it means only the fittest will survive. Would'nt life be pretty meaningless as we simply part of this huge mechanism that keeps evolving and nothing else?

Well, an Optimist would see Evolution as implying they were descended from a long line of 'the fittest'

Right? An Optimist would say: "Even if life is meaningless, and there is NO God, isn't it cool there is still a process for the continuous improvement of the species?"

See, the moment man became self aware, he became self important. For some reason when we figured out the nature of animal life, i.e. to collect energy, reproduce and defend itself, we decided we weren't animals, WE were more important than that. And so we hijacked God (a perfectly decent notion that intellect was involved in the origin of the universe), and decided we were if fact the Children of God destined for far more than the lowly cycle of life.

Evolution simply states that 'God is not required' for our specific creation. It's an admonition that we should 'get over' ourselves.

I see it as more a call to humility than pessimism.

Sorry but i don't quite understand your point. I am not saying whether or not its correct i am just not sure what you are trying to argue.

"Would'nt life be pretty meaningless as we simply part of this huge mechanism that keeps evolving and nothing else"

So the fact that "....we are simply a part of this huge mechanism that keeps evolving and nothing else" is what makes our life "meaningless??

Correct me if i am wrong but..do you already know what it means to have a meaningful life?

There's as much reason to believe Evolution is the epitome of optimism as the alternative.
End and Renewal seem to be integral parts of life. Nothing survives eternally so 'survival of the fittest' is meaningless in a discussion of Evolution or Fundamentalism.

Life is what you decide to make of it.
I disagree that we evolve and do nothing else.
We live. We love. We Play. We Laugh. We Smile.
We are Human.
I would disagree that my live is meaningless, sure it might not be part of some higher universal plan, and I might never make an impact on anyone outside my city, thats fine. People might not even remember me after I die. Nevertheless, Life is an unique journey that can only be taken once. No other person here on Earth will experience the same trip, meet the same people, or witness what I did.
Pessimism? I think not.

I would think that meaning could still be found even in the presence of evolution. I guess it depends on what sort of meaning you're looking for. If one needs to feel like a supremely important part of the universe then I agree that evolution makes that difficult.

evolution does not mean the fittest survive...
species can be isolated from predators...that is not evolution...but luck...yet they survive and propagate... (islands, secluded environments)

How is heaven fun...
no evolution....the same thing over and over...sounds fun for eternity...hugh!

If life was survival of the fittest then why do we have hospitals or people who selflessly help others in need?

That's exactly how I feel. What's the point of living if our only goal is to create new species? Who's going to be the one satisfied with this outcome? Evolution diminishes the miracle of life if you ask me...

Thanks for the thumbs down assholes :)
