I'm attempting to write a novel but am constantly fretting that I'd write either too much or too little. So hopefully if I find this information, it would possibly motivate me and cure my year-long block.

Let me explain how it is done professionally. You don't count pages, you count words. The average novel is between 90 and about 140 thousand words. To figure out how many pages that is, divide your word count by 250 words per page to come up with a page count. But if you want to sound professional, never use page count, always tell people how many words you have written.

Are you participating in the NaNoWriMo challenge? To write 50k words in the month of November? A lot of us are. P

Words Per Page Paperback

When Word documents go to a publisher they are double-spaced and in Times New Roman, size 12.

Some paperbacks have less words per page, some more... it depends.

Using the 'word count' facility under the 'Tools' menu is useful. The average FIRST novel is 80,000 to 100,000 words. (A Tom Clancy or Stephen King would be about 200,000.) Most publishers won't accept more than 100,000 from a writer who's not established.

About more than 90000 words will make a decent novel. Since on a default page of Word you get more than 300 words, it will be about 300 or more than that. Alittle less will be alright. Dont worry! Best of luck, for your writing.
Writing is a slow process and takes a lot of time. Be ready and prepared to give all that.

There is a way to format your pages in word so that they will print out in book form (or phamplet). Basically, it converts you printout to landscape, 2 colums per page (about 2 pages on one regular word page). So, about 1 page in Word for about 2 pages in a "regular" book. But books come in all sizes and lengths, so how long one should be depends on the story you have to tell, and your target audience.

Lessee...Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was about 260 pages on word (size 14)

However, don't worry about writing too much or too little. I have trouble writing too little, but heck, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; one of the greatest novels in literature isn't exactly a tome, is it?
