Do you still have to get a blood test before you get married? If so, why? What are you tested for?

Depends where you live. And depending on where you live depends on what tests are run. The states that do have testing are for Syphilis and/or Rubella.

The testing never had anything to do with DNA. Remember DNA testing is a new thing. Also, being related (cousins), although many find it offensive...it is legal. (1st cousins legal in over half of all states. 2nd cousins legal in all states.)

States that require a medical exam and/or blood testing.
Connecticut
Indiana
Massachusetts
Mississippi
Montana
Oklahoma
Washington D.C.

There are many states that no longer require blood tests to be married. They originally tested for syphillis but in a lot of states, it had been over 10 years since they had a case reported so they stopped requireing it.

I believe you should do it anyway just to make sure that you are both safe from the aids virus and that you can practice sex with your spouse without it having to be safe and that you can safely conceive a child if you want to. It would not be required but it would be smart.

Good Luck

It varies from state to state I think. Most states have done away with the blood tests. People used to have to take blood tests to make sure you weren't closely related because they didn't tolerate incest. Im not sure if they used it for std's back then or not. I can't see the government having the right to know that but maybe that was a reason as well. They checked the DNA to make sure the mitochondria werent the same.

Yes, you still have to have blood test. They test for anything major that you might pass on to the other if not treated. Most of the time, it is a formality . I am not sure about all the blood tests that they run, but it is a good idea. You always think you know a person, but do you really?

Not here in Washington. I have been married for 14 years and when we got married we did not have to take any blood test. I heard when I was younger that they tested your blood to make sure your were not realated to one another and to test for other things... .

No. I believe that they tested for sexually transmitted infections, like syphilis, that's why when you fail the blood test, you needed a shot of pennicillan (the cure to syphilis).

Anyways, if you're not already having sex with your fiance, it would be wise to have him tested before you get married/having sex even if he does claim to be a virgin.

I will most definitely be getting a blood test done, before marring my fiance, and before sex. Just to give both of us that great peace of mine....... As far as, the rest of you I would do the same, specially if you have kids, and most so for your own peace of mine, you must have self love, before you can love anyone else, and you must take care of yourself before you can take care of someone else, Just a little mother advice.

Couples should get tested for STDs even if it isn't required. A blood test does that . . .
