The first question should be, what car? Some transmissions are electronically controlled and some are not. For the electronically controlled, if there is a problem with the trans computer it defaults to the highest gear. This might even be as simple as a blown fuse (common in the older Jeep Cherokees).

Check the fluid, hot, with the engine running. Be sure it is on the full mark, but not over full. It should be red, not brown and especially not dark brown. Smell it. It should not smell burnt.
Some car transmissions are controlled by a computer. Older ones have vacuum modules, kick down levers, and bands.
You did not give the year, make, model, but this will help get you to people that are familiar with certain cars.
It could be as simple as an adjustment and it could be much worse. If the fluid is ok. Take it to a shop. Most will advise you for free (mini skirts help here!) or for a minimal charge.
Car problems suck!

In the transmission you have what is called a Governor. This part spins in the tail shaft and changes the flow of fluid according to how fast your vehicle is moving. your Governor might be stuck. With all transmissions there are a lot of things that could be wrong. you need to have it checked by a transmission shop. With it shifting from park to reverse and then to drive I would think the valve body is working fine.
