I am trying to divide a circular 2-d object (plate) into 6 pieces. The diameter is 7 inches. (think pizza) I do not have a compass, so does anyone know how I might go about doing this so it can be even? Please and Thanks!!

As the diameter is 7 inches, radius is is 3.5 inches.

Mark any diameter on circular 2D object.

Take a scale (inches marked in it).

With respect to 'both' outer ends of diameter, mark on both sides on "disc outer periphery"3.5 inches. In all we get four markings and we can join two more diameters!

When we cut through all three diameters, disc is cut evenly into six pieces!

Mark a point on the rim of the plate. Using a piece of string, measure the diameter of the plate by holding one end on the first mark and sliding around the rim with the string going across the plate until you have the longest length of string. This may take 2 or 3 tries. Mark this point on the plate and mark both ends of the string. Next, divide the string in half by putting the marked ends together and sliding your thumb & forefinger down the (two) string segments until both are equal length. Mark this point as well. Now you have your compas, and can strike two arcs from each end of the diameter you have found. Draw the three diameters thus defined and you will have your 6 equal pieces.

the circle is 360 degrees, so in order to get 6 pieces, you need 3 lines. that means the lines must be at 120 degree intervals. without a compass, huh? draw a line from top to bottom and then from left to right. this will give you 4 90 degree sections. on each section, draw a hypotenuse and you can find the length of the hypotenuses. half the length of the hypotenuse will give you your 120 degree points. hope this helps.
