The most fuel efficient cars that GM makes (except the hybrid's) are marketed (as far as accounting is concerned) at a loss. This has several reasons, one is to get buyers into a GM product and have them move up to better models as income and needs (children) press the consumer into a bigger car. It is much the same for Ford.
The problem is not the makers of the cars, but the consumer. If no one wants it, who will buy it?
If no one will buy it, why build it.
So stop picking on the makers of the cars!
If you are worried about this so much, just park your car and walk.

GM will do whatever helps their bottom line. They have no interest in going bankrupt. The reason they have not made more ecofriendly cars is because Americans have not shown a tremendous urge to buy them. Now that the Honda and Toyota hybrids and electrics are taking off, GM is beginning to build small, efficient cars. If Americans don't buy them, they'll stop again.

SUVs are much more profitable than little econoboxes, so it makes sense for the company to put a lot of its focus on these.
Mazda made rotary cars - still does I think - so that part (at least) of your question seems to be wrong.
