WI used to pay for hormonal therapy for inmates until the Republicans cut that from the budget.
NOW, three men are suing for cruel and unusual punishment because the State of Wisconsin won't pay for their sex change operation. THREE PRISON INMATES!

Absolutely not. There are a hundred other matters that taxpayers money should be going to and helping inmates "get their jollies" is not one of them. I understand medication is an essential and no one should be refused health care but you've been the same sex this long why don't you wait 'til you get out and do it on your own time with your own money. After the sex change, if the taxpayers paid for it, will we all receive thank you cards with a nice photo of what our tax money bought?

That is so ridiculous and disgusting. If these 3 men are looking to have female parts then that's just going to add to problems in jail. Might as well start putting men and women in the same prisons together if male inmates can go around getting free sex changes. This frustrates me so much. People will do anything. ANYTHING.

Whatever these people have done, they're still people, and still entitled to basic human rights. Denying medical treatment IS 'cruel and unusual punishment' and may even be unconstitutional. Prisoners can't pay for their own treatment while they're in prison; it has to be funded by the state.

'Sex change operations' are part of the only effective treatment; for transsexual people; the treatment for these conditions are as necessary for sufferers as Carbamazepine is for epileptics, or Insulin for diabetics. Transsexualism is not a choice, a fetish or a whim; it's a very real, very distressing congenital neurological condition that is often fatal if untreated.

If an inmate had a heart condition, would you deny him or her medication, or surgery (if necessary), knowing that he or she could die without it? You can't pick and choose which you agree to; either ALL inmates are entitled to medical treatment, or NONE are.

Did you read the article...? The judge "ordered the state to provide the inmate with psychotherapy and estrogen pending a trial." after the inmate "castrated herself/himself using a disposable razor blade" The judge ordered medical and psychological treatment for someone who was committing serious injury on themself. No different that ordering treatment for an attempted suicide. The judge did not say "taxpayers must pay for all sex changes". The judge ONLY said "this one innmate gets medical and psychological treatment so he doesn't hurt himself again while in custody. And frivilous lawsuits -- like the pants -- happen all the time. The people (lawyers, or here a judge) who file them often lose their license or receive sanctions for doing so. Your generalizations are not a correct interpretation of the factual or legal issues. And you're talking about a very few out of tens of thousands of judges nationwide.

Not no lbut HE*L nol Can you imagine, that is punishment. Sad that jails are not like in "Cool hand Luke". They should be set up like the ones thta the sheriff makes them wear pink and work, yes work. I assume they have hired Illegal workers to do their work. In Russia they sent entire prison brigades in advance of regular troops to make the Germans use up ammo.

i also don't think we should pay for them to have body buildign equipment, cable, ice cream.......

Better be careful as ACLU might get mad, no they are too busy protecting terrorist. I think I am losing my mind, but know it's no there. Is this America

New thing is watch for rightwing and repub talking heads to start having a field day at the expense of the entire group. No holds barred. It's pay back itme.

No I do not believe we should pay for it, maybe illegals, but not us, now mascara is a different story, just kidding. Take care.

I don't think taxpayers shoud have to pay for ANYONE'S sex change operation. If a person makes the decision to have the surgery, they should be responsible for the bill. I know some people feel it's something they "have" to do in order to "look" the way they "feel" inside, but at the end of the day it is still an elective surgery and therefore should be paid for by the person choosing to have the operation.

I have to wonder - seriously - just why any elective surgery would even be an issue concerning prisoners - let alone the basis for a lawsuit.
Perhaps I am too skeptical of people who claim that we are becoming a sue-happy, litigation society.
Maybe they're correct in their assessment after all.

They're in prison, what difference does it make? And No, why would taxpayers have to pay for an inmate's non-life-threatening operations?

I find it shocking that we would consider it. I believe in giving inmates the basics...that's it. Food, water, clean shelter, safety, a fully stocked library, psychological therapy and the ability to get an education...that's about it.

Believe it or not, I'm a liberal...but a practical liberal who does not break the law and believes those who do should be punished.

About as much as we should pay for Israel to get universal health care! At least inmates are Americans. We pay BILLIONS a year for Israel's welfare and I don't see any republicans complaining.
