Long story, but I have a 277V outlet and I need it to be 110V to plug in regular electrical appliances. How do I go about doing this? I do not need to have a very high load on the socket, just about 5A or so. I need to do this economically and as you can tell by my question, I am no good at electrical work. I can plug stuff in but that's about it. Any links to suitable transformers would be appreciated
Thanks.

That is a somewhat odd stepdown. Call a local electrical supply house.

The only way to do it is with a transformer. Go to your local electrical supply wholesaler, not home depot or Lowe's, but a real supply house and inquire about the cost of a 277/120 volt transformer. I would recommend a 1 KVA model, that will give you about 8.4 amps at 120 volts. 277 volts is derived from 1 phase of 480 volts 3 phase Y operating to ground, or neutral. You don't say where this 277 is, but I have never encountered 277 in anything but a commercial or industrial setting.

277 volts is the hot to neutral voltage of a 480 volt 3 phase wye system. Usually used for lighting in commercial buildings. Usually there will be a transformer on that system, stepping the voltage down to 208/120 volts. I would not mess around with that outlet trying to convert it to 120 volts. Call in an electrician to advise you.

What part of the world?
Is that 277 socket connected to 1/3 of a 480 3-phase circuit?
That's unusual.
There are a number of consumer products designed for standards conversion. Check with stores like Radio Shack.
Are you looking for something custom, a transformer that you connect yourself? Electronics suppliers can provide one.

in case you've 3 wires. A black a pink and a white. 2 are one hundred ten and one is the floor. fairly than assume which one is floor, i ought to attempt them with a voltage meter. once you already comprehend it really is the floor, use between the single hundred ten's and the floor for a one hundred ten plug.

you can buy a converter that plugs into the wall then you plug into it. Not expensive. Probably at Wall mart or Sears or Best Buy. I used one when I went to London.
