Well, there's the list price, so to speak, and then there's what you actually have to pay. And that depends on you.

As for the lowest list price, that will be the state university in the state where you live. Of course, there's the military academies which are free in the sense that you don't pay anything as you go, but you do owe military service as an officer after you graduate. The only totally free school that I know of is Deep Springs College in California, but they don't admit any women so you're out of luck there.

What you pay depends on you because there are still things such as merit-based scholarships. If you're smart enough and have proved that, universities will give you money. A young friend of mine got a full free ride for four years at Stanford.

Awesomeness is a subjective judgment, I think. What's awesome for me may not be what's awesome for you. So I have no comments there.

The one I went to: East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. The professors were awesome, the town is nice and relatively safe, and the people are friendly. I got a great, well-rounded education for the money

For most people, that would be the top public university in their home state.
