Honestly, I would give it back. I had that happen just a few weeks ago, I called in an order for lunch, went to pick it up and the girl gave me back $10.00 to much. I gave it back to her. She thanked me for being so honest and it made me feel good knowing that I did the right thing.

Since I use either a debit or credit card for most of my purchases this would not exactly apply. I have made only 5 or 6 cash purchases in the last several years and those were under $5 and I don't recall ever getting incorrect change either over or under.
If you go a penny over your account balance though, I guarantee the bank will be charging you lots of money for it.
When I was a McD's restaurant manager though, there was a man who used a $100 bill to pay for his food but who dropped his change in front of the counter. The next customer saw it, picked it up and showed it to me and asked who it belonged too so I told him, but the guy was already driving away in his car. So, I held onto the money. Three or four hours later, the man who had dropped the money came back into the store and I gave him back his money. He was very happy and surprised.

Keep it, especially if I've been a good customer and have given them plenty of profit in the past, but if it might cost the cashier their job then I might have second thoughts

A)
I am not lying
If it's like a penny or nickle or dime then I wouldn't but anything more then that they really shouldn't be a cashier.
Also, it's kinda stealing even though they gave it to you

I've actually been in that situation before and I gave it back-- I wouldn't want her to be accountable for the loss.

I have done both. It turns out that my moral center and sense of fairness and decency are have a directly inverse relationship with the state of my finances.

I have always corrected them. I work in a store part time so it does cause a mess when cash is wrong

yes because I'd know God would be pod if I thought he'd actually give me a break and seriously screw me as punishment later. I always try to go for the smaller screwing.
