Memories, the photographs of the soul...
good and bad, often include a lesson learned, Even my bad memories make me who I am.
I may hope they fade, but they don't have to go.

Only in the fact that life would be simpler and others would have to care for me.

I see a client with Alzheimer's who is stuck in the hospital awaiting placement in a nursing home. She's only in the hospital because her husband had a heart attack. She's scared and completely dependent on someone being with her to constantly tell her she's okay. She doesn't remember anything longer than two minutes so I have written all her "answers" in a notebook for her to read over and over to calm her down. It's really quite heart-breaking but it's probably more so for her family. For the most part, as long as she has constant reassurance, she seems content.

Well, yes and no.... rhetoricly, yes... but in reality no. I need to remember the bad times to keep a measure of where I've been so I can appreciate where I am. I need to remember the mistakes, so I can learn from them, and I need to remember the good times so I can smile in my old age.
I'd like the pain of past memories to go away, but not the events. They keep me grounded.
