Hi, could you please help me figure out what these lines mean from the song 'Hotel California' by The Eagles?

So I called up the captain,
'Please bring me my wine"
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since 1969'

What does it mean that they haven't had wine since 1969? Also, if you could tell me who is 'the captain'? (Because in the song they are at a hotel!)

Thanks for helping me out! ;)

Since you can check out of Hotel California but you can never leave...I assume that Death is the reason you can never leave.
So if the hotel has been closed since 1969 or if somebody died that year...maybe that would explain it! And it could be a play on words since spirit means soul and wine.

Well I think the "Captain" is the manager of the hotel, or the restaurant/bar and I don't think they haven"t had wine since 1969, but someone who would like a bottle of wine since 1969. I think that is what they ment by "spirit". ya know just someone who has a great "spirit" and would like some wine. I don't really know, but I love the song and that is how I always took it as.

He didn't say "we haven't had that wine" he said "we haven't had that spirit." He was using spirit for both reference to the word and the attitude. Basically saying, no one has done that since 1969. The captain I would assume would be the guy at the front desk or someone who works for room service.

The captain is often the head waiter at a restaurant.

The song is metaphorical and he is basically saying that the place hadn't partied like that since 1969.

The only thing I can tell you is I think the word "captain" is just a clever use of the word. In some fancy restaurants the waiters with the cloth over their arms are called "captains" might be wrong on that though

I'll give you a hint. The captain in the song would refer to the cellarmaster of the hotel.

"Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way " That's not a candle she's lighting up.

"Some dance to remember, some dance to forget" Some people do them do remember good memories, some people do them to forget bad memories.

'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device" That is basically what drug users are

"The stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast" The beast being the addiction/

"You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!" You can always say you aren't addicted or that you can quit anytime you want, but you'll always end up going back to them.

Pretty basic clear maening, there are other metaphors in there to decipher but that's tha basics.
