Zoey P is technically correct, except that most people use "short for" as equivalent to "nickname for". Since in the vast majority of cases nicknames ARE shorter than the original, "short for" is an understandable substitute. (If you say "Jimmy is short for James" that's how everyone understands it, even though the former is the same number of letters and an extra syllable!)

As for the origin -- Butterfly is correct about the word's origin, as is her source, though in general for looking up the origin and meaning of names I do NOT recommend "baby name" books and sites. They are very inconsistent, mixing good material with very poorly researched material. There are some reliable books and sites (and a piece of software called "Gwendolyn" [about $15 I think]), including the site linked below.

For what it's worth, the Greek word "zoe" (pronounced "ZOH - ay"), meaning "life" is found in "zoo", which IS short (literally) for "zoological garden" (that's ZOH-uh-logical).. zoological/zoology have to do with "the study of life [living things]"

My name is Zoey and its not short for anything it's just Zoey. By the way those two people below me if it was short for Zo or Zoe then that wouldnt make sense because zoey would be making it longer.

Zoey is a variation of the Greek name 'Zoe' meaning life. It's not shortened.
