when i put my car in drive it has white smoke coming from the tailpipe. It also looks like there is water, but I can't be sure because it rained. The exhaust has a strong gas smell. It will smoke when in drive put not when in park and once the car warms up it stops. What could be the problem. I just had some other thing fixed and now this started up....

this could be condensation coming from it ,most cars will do this a little when the weather is damp, its normal,id keep an eye on the fluid levels in it,and see if the coolant level drops any,you may not even have a problem with the car,it may just be the weather, mine did the same thing today, and it has rained here also,so it may be a normal thing for it to do,good luck with it.

I have a 2007 GMC Seirra and it does the same thing on cool nights or first thing in the morning.

All cars do this from condensation build up in the exhaust as the exhaust pipes heat up when driving and when the air is cooler that the pipe you get condensation.

It also happens in the reverse .. take the car out of the cold and drive it into a warm garage and you can experience the same thing.

In the extreme cold, like where I live, on cold days I experince this constantly.

Yes it is possible that you have a head gasket leak and in that case your engine may not idle properly and you would experience a loss of power as well as increased engine temperature.

White Smoke and Condensation run out are not indicators of bad valve seals.

Good luck with it .... I hope it is just the change of seasons playing games with ya.

Fall is upon us and this may be the cause.

Make sure of the color, if it is a light blue then the valve seals may be leaking. If it is a white color with water you would have water leaking possibly from the water pump. Remember though all vehicles will have a small amount of condensation build in the tailpipe due to heat from the pipe and moisture in the air upon first start up.

Antifreeze come on boyz! A blown head gasket and your car would still run but like crap though you would see white smoke but it would be beacuse the water and gas combination being burnt. One way to check that is to look at your oil and see if there is water in it.

you never did say what year or make &model your car is. if it is an old model and it has a carb. the carb needs to be ajusted or rebuild. that may be one of the reasons you are smelling gas coming out of your exhaust. a carb., that the air mixter is not adjusted right it will also smoke a little white color. the other thing on water coming out of you exhaust pipe; could be coming from your heads that are crack, usually they are cause from over heating your car, or you got a blow head gasket also from over heating your car. check to see if you got water in your oil, if you do it's your heads or head gaskets. when your heads or head gaskets go out. you will get water in your plugs causing it to smoke white, also causing it to miss. on fords and dodges they have aluminum water pumps. they will corrode and leak water into the oil. and maybe it has something to what ever they fix your car. you did not say what you had your car work on.

Sorry about your luck, but im pretty sure you have a cracked head or blown head gasket. You need to get this fixed asap before you cause damage to the lower end of your motor.

sounds like you have a blown head gasket . the white smoke would be from the anti freeze burning off

Bad head gasket, cracked head get it checked so so you don't hydrolock the motor, or sieze the motor from diluting of the oil.
