I would do it without the gear.
The 5 carat diamond ring will buy plenty of Antibacterial soap...

Yes, especially if I paid for it. I'd try to do whatever I could to avoid losing that investment. If it's lost it's lost. But if I KNOW where it is I'd do what I have to do to attempt to retrieve it.

Absolutely, I can always take a shower afterwards. I have been in plenty of places that are that bad for a lot less reward.
