Depends on style, subject, complexity and medium.

Oil or acrylic painting will, obvioulsly take much longer than simple pen and ink drawings. A single painting can take anywhere from a single day to, perhaps weeks.

And this is not to suggest that pen and ink is any less difficult than painting. Between rough, thumbnail sketches, publisher's approval and rework, even this method can take several man hours to complete even one image.

How fast do you work? What sort of illustrations will you be doing?

If you're doing complicated pen and ink drawings, colored pencil renderings or Beatrix Potter-like watercolors it will take you longer than if you're coloring in cartoon-like figures done with marker.

I {my son} have a few that are done entirely with photographs... I can't imagine that they took more than a couple of shoots to put together...
