He was real.. But not a blood drinking magical vampire:
Following the publication of In Search of Dracula by Radu Florescu and Raymond McNally in 1972, the supposed connections between the historical Transylvanian-born Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia and Bram Stoker's fictional Dracula attracted popular attention. During his first reign (1456–1462), "Vlad the Impaler" is said to have killed from 20,000 to 40,000 European civilians (political rivals, criminals, and anyone else he considered "useless to humanity"), mainly by using his favourite method of impaling them on a sharp pole. The main sources dealing with these events are records by Saxon settlers in neighboring Transylvania, who had frequent clashes with Vlad III and may have been biased. Vlad III is sometimes revered as a folk hero by Romanians for driving off the invading Turks. His impaled victims are said to have included as many as 100,000 Turkish Muslims.

Some say that the fictional character of Dracula was based on Vlad III the Impaler, a 15th century prince in Romania.
No doubt that Bram Stoker was also influenced by earlier novels about vampires -- such as Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" John Polidori's "The Vampyre."

Vlad Tepes was a real person. Dracula, or 'son of the dragon' was from his father who was known as Dracul. He was known for the impaling of this enemies. The blood drinking came from another 'royal' from that area of the world Elizabeth Bathary was a princess who had her servants, and then other when she ran out of servants, slaughtered so she could drink and bathe in their blood to keep her beauty. She prefered virgins at first, but soon would drain anyone. Her cruelties mixed with those of Vlad Tepes, well there you have Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Dracula is based loosely on Vlad the Impaler, who was more evil than Dracula ever was.

Actually he was real his name was Vlad The Impaler Dracula/ Tepes it was his real full name. He ate the flesh of his victims and drank his blood and if enemies tried to enter his kingdom he would kill them and leave their rotting and festering bodies in the road to scare others away. There are a lot of facts about him especially on wikipedia and they show a lot of things about him on T.V as well. Bram Stoker was said to barely know anything about dracula. He was kind of like the blood countess who used others blood to get more power but she only used girls.

I don't believe the Vampire was based on Vlad Dracula, or Vlad, son of Dracul, who is a historical hero in Romania. I think that Bram Stoker's first name for the character was Van Pire. Fortunately, he abandoned that corny name when he came across the name Dracula and liked it.
