I live in India, world/s largest democracy where most things are in shambles in spite of a sincere Government in power under Honorable Manmohan Singh who appears to be chained and suffocating. If this question is put to me, I will unhesitatingly say, United States of America, a country that unfortunately is looked upon as a hostile power to many other countries.

I don't think democracy in reality can exists. OK, US can be considered an honest democracy.
Can a person stand for presidential election or even for any seat without raising funds, can't media corrupt the image of a candidate with a minuite? So, who is really choosing the candidates? those who own media and those who provide fund to candidates. Public can vote to only those who are properly introduced be media and those who are given fund to run their election campeign. So, in reality first capitalists select the candidates and than public select only among those who are already selected by these greedy capitalist. Do you think after winning, these election wiinners can really do anything which is in benefit of public and against these capitalist. Democracy is just an illusion to enslave people without they realising that they are slaves.

First of all, a democracy is a country where the people rule (democracy, from the Greek meaning "people" "rule"). As such, there is not one country that IS a democracy. The U.S. of A. is a Republic; i.e., we elect people to represent us.
While American Indians (Native Americans) had democracy, not one country on earth is now or has ever been a democracy.

You are correct: the U.S. is looked upon as being hostile. Ain't that funny? When ever a country is being overrun by their enemy, who do they call upon for aid and assistance? What country does every other country on earth emulate? Yep, the U.S.!
Shows what people know...

The Hon.PM,Mr. Manmohan Singh has unfortunately proven to be spineless because he has caved in to the blackmail of the communists whose support he needs to stay in power. If he had any guts and principles he would have called their bluff and gone ahead with operationalising the Nuclear Deal with the
US and been prepared to face the electorate
should the communists have withdrawn their support.
Coming to your main query, the answer is the USA which has all the "checks and balances" as
rightly put by Mr.witwwats.The US may be a
bully and throw its weight and might about but
it has scruples and principles and respects the
citizens.

Unfortunately, the U.S. is well on the way to losing its democracy....but the people are too docile, and afraid of terrorism, and sheep like, to see what's happening to our constitutional liberties.

In fact, here's an article that describes the 10 Steps toward Fascism, and Bush has taken us over half way there.

The USA is not a democracy, but a constitutional representative republic. The USA is the oldest continuous form of government in existence today. We must be doing something right.

In democracy, a government is by its people for its people. The characteristic of people becomes characteristic of the government. So why complain about it ?

I would agree.

"Democracy" doesn't mean peace and goodwill.

It means checks and balances.

Example: Since we can not eliminate crime, we can put more police in the field to protect us. That is an example of check and balance.

Not perfect, but it works.
