Men kill each other for it...

Women prostitute their bodies for it...

Children squabble over it on the school playground...

It drives people to dishonesty, theft, greed and malice...

...that thing is called "MONEY." Everybody loves it, everybody wants more of it, and few if any earn what they feel they deserve.

Hey, I love money just much as the next person, and I'll be the first to jump through a flaming hoop for it if the price is right. ;-)

But why are folks so hostile or fearful towards any suggestion that they might be materialistic?

When a professional athlete signs a $100 million/6 year deal, why do they launch into some speech about how they did it for world peace or to rediscover their inner beauty?

When a Playboy centerfold poses nude, why do they give some nonsensical diatribe about how they did it to promote art and free expression?

Why can't people just admit the simple truth: that's "it's all about the money"? = )

When you accuse someone of being materialistic, they become defensive right away, most of the time anyway. Yes I agree it is all about the money. Look at the Presidential election going on right now. You hear so much about who has the most money. Is that how we are to decide how we vote for our next president, things are in a sad state, instead of helping our fellow man, we are in general all out for ourselves. Now that I have said that I live in N. San Diego Ca. where all the fires have been burning, and the outpouring of kindness has been amazing. So with that thought in mind. I don't think all is loss, human kind does come together during a disaster, and I pray we can be like this a lot more often.

I think the reason is revealed right in the way you posed the question... you are "accusing". Accusations are judgments placed on other people. The natural reaction of anyone that feels attacked is to be defensive.

And no, it is not always about the money. Many times? Absolutely. Will most people disrespect themselves for a buck? Yes, But be careful of imposing your "it's all about the money" assumption on everyone. It isn't always valid.

It's called denial wearing the cloak of justification. BTW, it's usually better not to claim "everybody" this or that - unless you're including me - which you're not - because I speak for myself.
