It costs several million dollars to make a game no matter what hardware it runs on.

Then you want to sell it to customers. Here are the rough counts of machines:

PSP - 342 thousand
XBox - just under 1 million
PC - 28 million

So what platform should you write for to make money?

I don't get the question?

Is it why pcs instead of Macs etc? Because it makes more sense for developers to focus on what eh potential playes already have.

Why massive games instead of doing something else on PCs? because it is fun?

Why massive games instead of console games? partly the first one, partly because the consoles don't offer the same experience (yet) for that type of game.

Why only PCs and not Macs, consoles etc. also for a single game? I tis expensive and difficult and expensive to write once, let alone many times on incompatible systems.
