Does this mean that a retail store can not legally sale me a gun?

It probably depends on what state you live in. A relative of mine had been in a mental hospital for clinical depression, yet was able to get a gun in North Carolina, which he used to kill himself.

Despite what your local laws say, if you have ever had suicidal tendencies, please do not buy a gun. Even if you are not currently sick, you could relapse in the future.

Since you have a documented history of mental illness, why don't you just NOT buy a gun?

Because Larry M would know what's up. He also has a documented history of mental illness. Thumbs down his sorry being.

Even if in some states they could sell you a gun, why would you want one?

Maybe. It depends on the actual details and the state you live in, in addition to federal law.

Depends upon the nature of the illness and the type of weapon.
