It probably depends on what state you live in. A relative of mine had been in a mental hospital for clinical depression, yet was able to get a gun in North Carolina, which he used to kill himself.
Despite what your local laws say, if you have ever had suicidal tendencies, please do not buy a gun. Even if you are not currently sick, you could relapse in the future.
