I believe that marriage is a wonderful institution. I also believe that American society has degraded its value and have settled for something counterfeit. If you think of marriage as a big expensive 5 hour party then you are looking at the counterfeit version. If you think that marriage is merely just co-habitating with someone or "shacking up" you are also looking at the counterfeit version. True marriage is not only legally binding it is mentally, physically, and spiritually binding. It is about commitment. It's not about as long as it feels good. When you marry someone then you are saying when I feel that I can't live without you and when I wish I didn't have to live with you, I am still with you because I am committed. When you marry someone the two should become one. Therefore it's no more "mines" and "yours" it's ours. Our money, our home, our problems.

I think marriage is a great idea for 2 people who are in love. They must both work on the marriage to make it work well, but it is a labor of love, making it all worthwhile.
I am 49 years of age, and I live in the US near Chicago.

I think Marriage is a way to totally commit to the other person. To feel secure enough that you're not wasting your time. To be devoted enough to see each others dreams come true. I've never tried it (close but no cigar!) but plan on it at least once, when I'm all grown up! 39 Pennsylvania

i think it gives society a basis to live off of and thrive. its a way to be organized and make people feel complete. people these days give up so easily on marriage because it gets too 'difficult.' if you've noticed, the more society degrades itself, the less marriage is valued.
what happened to 'for better or for worse'? when you go thru tough times with your spouse, work thru it, dont just leave him because you're tired of it. my parents worked through a 6 year problem and came out happy. its not impossible.

I don't want to get married at all because I just want to be free. Divorce is such a prevalent thing now and its expensive. I'd rather just have a live-in boyfriend. I'm 18 and I live in the USA.
