There are three things that you need to know about tarantulas
1)There is a traditional Italian dance named after them.To see how it's actually performed look at the opening scene in the Godfather
2) Just because you personally find something ugly doesn't necessairly mean that that somethng is bad or poses an actual threat to you .
3) In the big scheme of things a tarantula is considerably more important to it's environment than you are to yours. Let it be and learn to make friends with it.

holy crap batman, robin, AND catwoman. I'd be jumping out of my skin right now. Better call an exterminator, but until he gets there buy the maximum strength raid stuff that says it's for spiders. I used to live in an old duplex backed up to a field and found lots of dead spiders around my floorboards because I used this stuff like crazy.

Catwoman's answer is pretty good, just now this:
1. They are NOT poisonous. Their bite hurts, but they are NOT poisonous. Scary looking yes, but not fatal.
2. Call a professional exterminator, ASAP. If that's a while off, then try any number of spider/insect traps until then.
3. Keep in mind: Your sleeping quarters are probably a long way from where he/she is, so keep your door shut. Putting a towel down by the door crack will alleviate any chances of entry. You will be okay.

Don't overreact it's only a GIANT, HAIRY and NASTY VICIOUS SPIDER! Seriously though, it's not a Tarantula (unless you live in a rain-forest). Mothballs will send spiders packing. Be aware though, the spider was there for a reason (for food, usually bugs of some type). Get rid of him and you may be over run with little critters.

Tarantulas usually live in small holes in the ground. You might want to look for any small holes inside the closet or outside. If you poor water down the hole they will come out. If you don't want to disturb them make sure your not watering their homes. They aren't that bad, just kind freaky!
Oh yeah... they can take down scorpions too. Do you live in a dry place?

They won't bite you. You're too big.
They mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice, or birds. Most tarantulas are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade while others are eaten as food.

People in Cambodia eat roasted tarantulas. The legs taste like chicken (you knew that was coming!) and the belly tastes like eggs, mushrooms, nuts and mud all mixed together.
