Everyone had guns, if you were a wad of dumb you had the threat of getting blasted by nearly anyone.

It was violent. While not everyone carried a gun most did. There was little to no law enforcment in many towns. The towns with law enforcment usually found it easier to allow people to handle their own issues. Trespassing, theft and adultry often were settled when the wronged man shot the accused. Leaving no one to be brought to justice. It gave the sherrif less work in a time when shooting a person over cards was common place.

The old west is no different than any point in human history, it had it's violent moments but for the most part it was non-violent. Like now the violent moments attract attention and gossip, and the non-violent ones are ignored as mundane.

It was violent. It wasn't as violent as it could have been because most everyone was armed. You tend to bite your tongue about some things when you know an unrestrained temper or cutting remark might cost you your life. But it was still very violent.

Well... most everyone carried a gun. There wasn't that many people out in the west. And day to day life was a risky business, not leaving allot of free time to go cause trouble.
