Washington had a vast network of spies during the revolution. Most of them were merely sypathizers who reported troop movements (usually in and out of cities or near their homes), supplies the British had, and composition of the British forces (Hessian mercenaries, Torry loyalists, or Redcoats).

If they were on the side of the colonies, they spied on the British. If they were on the British side, they spied on the colonists.
