I refered to your profile before answering first your question. First, let me say that you don't have to be glued on your seat all day long since you have still limits in answering and questioning. You have to reach Level 5 to have an unlimited time in answering and questioning. That's the time you could be glued all day and night long. But being glued in answering questions is not at all a passport to be a Top Contributor unless you attain alot of BEST ANSWERS in a particularly category. I am not very much acquainted the exact percent needed but some of my good firends told me to get more than 10 percent or more. You have to be consistent in getting Best Answers in a certain category. It will just pop out someday.
Good luck and make the most of it. Hope to see you around with the orange banner. But enjoy and continue sharing your ideas and opinions, this must be your priority, being top contributor is an added spice to you.
Thnaks for asking. Have a great day!

"Top Contributor" status is something that is assessed weekly. Other than that, Yahoo has been a little bit vague about what, exactly, it is handed out for.
They way they tend to describe it is that they put all the information into a 'hopper' and whoever 'bounces out on top' is a "Top Contributor" for a week. It is not necessarily based on volume of answers or time spent, so being 'glued to your chair' won't help too much, I think.
If you really want a badge, find one of the categories that doesn't get too much attention. Below's a link to the official blog which may answer some more of your questions...

There are two ways, 1) log on as two different users and give each user the best answer every time, or 2) get run over by a train, survive, totally ****** up, and have nothing better to do he he x.

Answer those questions that you are qualified to answer, in a truthful, helpful and non-critical fashion. Best to be as concise as possible, utilizing only one or two paragraphs. Avoid long-winded and useless diatribes as some do on here.
Answer as many as you can and always be up-beat and cheerful.

I think it's about having the highest number of Best Answers in any particular section. To get it, you have to concentrate on the section/s you like, which most people don't do - they roam.
