Connection to actual events
This film, like its original from 1973 and the films Psycho (1960), Deranged, and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), was inspired by Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein.[2] Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. The interior of the house, particularly the macabre living room filled with bones, was also based on the crime scene notes describing the inside of Gein's home. The film's opening claims the events are factual, a use of the false document technique. (Filming of the first movie was from July 15, 1973 to August 14, 1973, while the opening narrative claims that the events took place on 18 August 1973.) Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the events.
"The movie starts out with some real police footage of the crime. Then seen are some random bits of evidence such as glasses and paper with writing on it. We then see a police evidence tape that has a walkthrough of Leatherface's home. We see the officer guiding through the stairwell to the basement as he points out some scratches on the wall (comes later on in the film). "

How much of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is based on the real life murderer Ed Gein?
Despite being heavily touted as "inspired by a true story," both Tobe Hooper's original 1974 film and the 2003 Marcus Nispel remake are only lightly based on the real-life murderer Ed Gein, who is suspected to have taken several victims between 1954 and 1957. Perhaps the most recognizable similarity is the film's house, whose gruesome content was similar to that found in Ed Gein's home in 1957.

This is what www.imdb.com has under their trivia section about the movie...
Contrary to popular belief, this film is not a true story. It was filmed from 15 July 1973 - 14 August 1973, while the opening narrative claims that the real events took place on 18 August 1973, so it would be impossible for the film to be based on actual events which had not happened at the time of filming.
Director Tobe Hooper claims to have got the idea for the film while standing in the hardware section of a crowded store. While thinking of a way to get out through the crowd, he spotted the chainsaws.

No, the story is not real it is very, very loosely based on Ed Gein a serial killer in the 60's or 70's.. I saw the E True Hollywood Story on the movie and it briefly discussed the "reality" of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The original is still pretty good... good luck

It was loosely base on the true story of a man from Indiana or somewhere (nowhere near Texas). The Jessica Biel version was a remake of movie from the late 70's of the same title. The "footage" of investigators is also fake, just like the Blair Witch stuff. Nothing like that has ever happened in Texas, and if you try to find the area they said they were in on the map, it doesn't exist. The roads they talk about don't even cross each other.

No. But the media promoting the movie made it sound like it was. The lead "Leatherface" was loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein, but that's about it.

No, it was based on a real guy named Ed Gein. He was a loner who was tarnished by an over bearing mother when he was younger, he only killed a couple of people, but is deal was parusing the obituaries to dig up fresh graves of women of whom he would first try to bring back to life, then after being unsuccessfukl he would mutliate their bodies, mainly their genitalia. You can look him opn the website - crimelibrary

The movie was real since it exists. What actually happened in the movie didn't really happen.
