When the freezer is going thru its defrost phase, the ice cubes of course are a little bit melted, but mostly still solid. But they always get that distinctive odd smell.
Then, when they refreeze again, they don't have a smell again.
Where does this smell come from, and should i throw my ice away during this cycle?

Remove the ice and place into plastic bag like commercial ice.even then you need to change to new ice, as ice will absorb odors from the food that the blown air picks up.

It's a type of freezer burn. It won't hurt you but it would taste better if you throw them out and start over.
