Design gives us something to make sense of. Design gives the eye something to follow, the mind something to comprehend and the person something to admire.

Without conscious design, every man made construct is, merely randomness.

A spoon is "designed" to carry liquids or semiliquids. A knive is a "poor" design for this purpose.

A tire is "designed" to help an automobile move efficiantly and safely on paved surfaces. An iron train wheel is a "poor" design for this purpose.

A home is "designed" for the comfort and safety of human beings and their belongings. A radio tower would be a poor design for THIS purpose.

A billboard is "designed" to impart a bit of information, very quickly to the people in cars, driving by at high speeds. A newspaper is a poor design for getting this information to the receiver.

Images of wolves devouring prey are designed to frighten and shock the reader of an adventure story. They would be poor designs for small children's bed time stories.

Good design is to art what composition is to music. With out it its just a bunch of noise. Keep in mind just like Jazz many of these rules can be broken by talented people who understand their purpose.
Design is what pulls it all together.
