That would be Lou Gehrig and Roberto Clemente, for sure. Clemente died on a humanitarian mission to help the people of Nicaragua at age 38 on December, 31, 1972 and everyone knows Gehrig got the disease that just so happened to have his same name. He was only 37 years old when he died on June 2, 1941.

There are actually 6:

- Babe Ruth - elected in 1936, one year after he retired. At the time, the Hall had not yet instituted the 5-year waiting period.
- Lou Gehrig - elected in 1939, the year he retired. A special election was held because his mortal illness made it questionable whether he'd live long enough to make the next election.
- Carl Hubbell: elected in 1947, 4 years after his last game. See note above about the 5-year period not yet being in force (or at least not strictly adhered to.)
- Mel Ott: Elected in 1951, 4 years after retiring. See previous note.
- Joe DiMaggio: 1955, 4 years after retiring. See previous note.
- Roberto Clemente: elected in 1973, the year after his final season. After Clemente's untimely and heroic death, the BBWAA waived the 5-year rule to allow Clemente's consideration on that year's ballot. (This waiver was later made into a rule for any player who died before the 5-year period was up.)

The answer your friend is looking for is Gehrig and Clemente, though - they were the only ones for whom an exception was made. The others were elected earlier because the rules were different.

Two players are Roberto Clemente and Lou Gehrig both great players who died before their time. Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash and Lou Gehrig got that horrible disease eventually named after him.

Casey Stengel...I just got through reading a book about him. He was surprised by the announcement down in Florida (he was already out of baseball and kind of frail..he was asked to make a presentation or announcement down in spring training) ofcourse the official ceremony took place in Cooperstown that summer. I think the other may have been Gehrig.
