is the check engine light responsible for my 98 mit. eclipse smoking? the diagnose waz oxygen and gas sensor which my mechanic tried fixing and didnt do a good job, the light still comes on tho

The check engine light comes on when there is a code read from the computer, and your mechanic probably did a scan of the computer to see what those codes were.

He found out that the oxygen sensor and the gas sensor were bad.

Then he should have replaced them - cleared the codes, and re-ran the system again for other codes.

It may be the pcv valve system,there a little filter for the air to go into the engine for it called the crank case venitlaor filter (usually).If it is black smoke then it is getting too much gas, and could be anumber of things .If it is white smoke it is probably a blown head gasket IF it over heats.
Try a code scanner.
