It's not silly in the least! In here it really has lost its meaning but a thumbs up should be reserved for an answer that properly addresses the question and be well thought out. A thumbs down is definitely for the inane and ignorant answers or ones that do not address the question at all...I've seen so many answers that simply say 2 points or I don't know that it's ridiculous. Some even answer what they think you asked and not what you really asked.
Bear in mind that not every answer deserves a thumbs up or down and needn't be given at all!

I give thumbs up for an answer that is informative, or interesting or witty (depending on the category), or when someone has made a good effort to be helpful.
I don't like to report people unless their answer is really offensive or a flagrant violation, so I give a thumbs down for wrong or misleading answers, minor infringement, ignorance, bigotry or crudeness, or when someone merely says 'yes' or 'no' to a question obviously designed to elicit interesting answers.
Although saying 'I don't know' is actually against the rules, I merely give it a thumbs down.
Edit:- I have just give Ste G a thumbs down because people should be able to support any football team they like without being called 'losers'. Sorry Ste G, but I think I've just blown your theory out of the water! lol

I give a thumbs down if I thought an answer was mean or inconsiderate, not just because I don't agree with it. I give a thumbs up if I liked the answer no matter what the reason, or if it made me laugh.

I give a thumbs down if the person was being an idiot answering the question. If the person was really helpful, or gave a great answer I give a thumbs up!

I give a thumbs up if the question was really interesting or different, or someone's answer gave a new spin on a regular question. I give thumbs down for ignorant/perverse questions and closed minded/off subject/belittling answers.

I haven't done it for some time but usually i give thumbs up as a confidence booster to someone or as a recognition of something good they have done (instead of saying 'nice'). I give thumbs down as more of a sarcastic jokey way of saying something is not very good.
Quoting:
'IT COMES FROM THE ROMAN DAYS WHEN CHRISTIANS AND GLADIATORS HAD TO FACE MORTAL COMBAT IN THE COLISEUM AGAINST EACH OTHER AND AGAINST WILD ANIMALS SUCH AS LIONS AND TIGERS. IF THEY COMPORTED THEMSELVES BRAVELY OR DEFEATED THEIR FOE, THE EMPEROR GAVE A THUMBS UP TO SPARE THEIR LIVES. IF THEIR BATTLE WAS NOT TO THE LIKING OF THE EMPEROR OR THE PEOPLE, THE THUMB WOULD GO DOWN.'
This was not the case, actuallly it has been shown that it was thumbs up to signify death (as you would run your thumb across your neck to tell them to chop the head off), historians have not yet agreed on which is the the case, however, they are more prone to the later.

If I think they are being really stupid or mean I give them thumbs down.
If I think they had a really good point or their answer has a lot of meaning, then I give them a thumbs up.
