Does it really go on forever? If not then where does it stop? What's on teh other side of the boundaries?

Seriously people..it's something to think about!

It does not go on forever.
It does not stop, either.
Just like a beachball.
There is no other side.
Just like a Moebius strip.
It's good stuff.
But you can't just think about it.
You also have to measure.
And then it reveals its secrets.
But only to those who really want to know.

Yes I do think about space and sometimes I think where does it all end if at all. If the universe is expanding like the BIG BANG THEORY then what is on the other side of the outer edge? Is that space or anti space ?
Maybe at the end of expansion, when gravity is no longer a cohesive force the present day universe will collide with a cosmic egg and create another BIG all over again. Now that would be cool.

I think you just answered your own question. It has to go on forever because if there was an end, what would be on the other side of that boundary. Some will tell you that space ends where the furthest stars are, but if you had a space ship out there, you could keep going on into blackness forever.

Currently, the theory of relativity predicts that space (i.e. our universe) is expanding. Some believe that this means that there is a limit to our universe, and (as 1 answerer believes) there is literally nothing beyond. One well-done analogy is that the universe is similar to the outer surface of a balloon, and the balloon is expanding. Space itself is limited by the expansion.

There are other physicists who believe that our universe may actually be contained *within* a gigantic black hole. If there is sufficient mass in our universe, this may be true. Presumably, if one were somehow able to escape our hypothetical "black hole" universe, we would be able to see the "outer" universe, perhaps containing several similar entire universes encapsulated in black holes, perhaps containing nothing else, perhaps containing matter and energy just as ours does. Indeed, the "outer" universe could even be contained within a more gigantic black hole, etc. etc.

Of course, if there is *not* enough mass in our universe to make it a black hole, it may be that the universe simply extends infinitely.

One pet theory of mine (not based on any real evidence) is that the universe is circular, and the things that we see very far away are just the light from our own area of the universe, which after billions of years has traveled in a sort of circle back to us. Thus, we may actually be looking at the early form of our own galactic cluster.

It *is* fascinating to think about, but personally I would be happy if we just sent a man to Mars. And where are those hover cars, anyway? (Oops - my age is showing)

If u started out in your super space ship traveling at .9 the speed of light ,u could travel 100,000 years and still not get there. Range in tour thoughts to something obtainable.

Well, It has to be like HUGE. Do you know how big the sun is? Earth is like a microscopic dot to the sun! So just think how big the sun is. Space has to be a million times bigger than that if it holds all those other galaxies, stars, and planets!

I always think about that! Who knows how other many planets are out there. There is so much we have not explored and cannot explore. There are probably planets full of people or other species way more advanced than us. It's infinite :)

Space ends where the universe ends. There is nothing "beyond" it as there is no beyond. The universe is expanding, however, so you could travel at an incredible speed and never get to the edge of it.
